Recent Listening - July 7
This week I’ve been listening to the following music on constant rotation. In the car, at the gym, in the office, etc.
Chrome Cell Torture - Ibiza
I’ve long been a fan of Drew Bennett’s music. His band Oily Boys put out an EP called Majesty the year I turned 18. That record was 10 minutes long, and the art was beautiful but told you absolutely nought about the music itself.
Ibiza is similarly mysterious and layered. Acidic and Bury The Boy are my favourite tracks. The latter has a guitar lead that reminds me of Christian Death.
Synergy Trilogy - S/T
Another Australian project here. Probably for fans of Tropic of Cancer or HTRK, but a little freakier overall. Feels like there's a sense of humour embedded in the music.
I particularly like the tune Something's Snapped because it reminds me of Current 93.
Philipp Otterbach - The Dahlem Diaries
I'm late to this one, which admittedly always makes me feel like my friends are holding out on me. Surely one of them has listened to this.
It's not often that ambient or found sound is so groovy. There's parts on this record that remind me of William Orbit - sans drums, which is great for enhanced background listening. Try working to this one, it's nice.
My Generation - Want It
This song rocks. It came out last year (I think), but I only heard it for the first time last week. The band are playing PPM's birthday next month at Zebulon.
Same vocalist from P22 and Purity, both bands I watched frequently when I first moved to Los Angeles. Amazing deadpan singing voice, lazy in the right way.
